Mahmudur's contempt of court hearing adjourned till Oct 11
The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned till October 11 the hearing on a contempt of court petition filed against detained Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of daily Amar Desh.
Two SC lawyers Reaz Uddin Khan and Barrister Mynul Hassan filed the contempt of court petition on August 17 with the Supreme Court against Mahmudur Rahman and Hasmat Ali, publisher of daily Amar Desh, for publishing a commentary under the the headline "Swadhin bicharer name tamasa" (Farce in the name of independent trial) on May 10.
The apex court on the day issued a contempt of court rule against Mahmudur and Hasmat Ali, asking them to explain why they should not be prosecuted for publishing the commentary.
The court on the same day fixed August 24 (today) for hearing the rule.
The jail authorities on Tuesday produced Mahmudur Rahman before the Appellate Division in connection with the contempt of court petition.
Mahmudur Rahman prayed to the court to give him time for replying to the rule.
The full bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim, adjourned the hearing and fixed October 11 for further hearing on the petition.
The court asked the prison authorities to produce Mahmudur Rahman on October 11 before this court.
Eailer on August 19, the apex court convicted Mahmudur Rahman and sentenced him six months' impriosment and fined Tk 1 lakh for gross contempt of court by publishing a report on his daily with under the headline "Chamber manei sarkar pakkhe stay" [Chamber bench means stay order in favour of the government] published on April 21.
